How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram

Instagram doesn't tell you when someone unfollows you, and there's no list of who left. You can still find out, though — without handing your password to anyone. Here's the one safe method that works in 2026.

Why the old unfollower apps stopped working

For years, "who unfollowed me" apps asked for your Instagram username and password, then logged in on your behalf to pull your follower list. Instagram has been cracking down on this for a long time. To Instagram, those logins look like bot activity, so accounts end up with temporary blocks, identity checks, and sometimes outright bans. On top of that, you're giving your password to people you know nothing about.

Instagram's official API doesn't share follower lists with third-party apps. So any app promising "real-time" unfollow alerts is, one way or another, logging into your account as you.

The safe way: your Instagram data export

Instagram has a built-in feature that lets you download your own data. The export contains your complete followers and following lists, with dates. Compare two exports taken on different days, and you'll see exactly who unfollowed you in between.

  1. Request your export. Go to Accounts Center → "Your information and permissions" → "Download your information". Select only "Followers and following", set the date range to "All time" and the format to JSON. Full walkthrough in our step-by-step guide.
  2. Drop the ZIP into unfollowig. No need to unzip it. The file is processed right in your browser and never uploaded anywhere.
  3. Repeat in a week or two. unfollowig keeps both snapshots and shows you who unfollowed and who followed you in that time.

What if you only have one export?

A single export already tells you a lot:

  • Who doesn't follow you back — you follow them, they don't follow you. Often that's what people actually mean by "unfollowed". More on that here.
  • Who you recently unfollowed — Instagram keeps this list in your export.
  • Which follow requests are still pending — if you've requested to follow private accounts.

But an exact list of who left needs two points in time: yesterday they were a follower, today they're not. That's why it's worth requesting your first export today — it becomes your baseline.

How often should you check?

For a personal account, every 2–4 weeks is plenty. If you run a creator or business account, or you're running ads or giveaways, check weekly so you can see who leaves after specific posts.

Why someone might show up as "unfollowed" by mistake

  • They changed their username — in a comparison, that looks like the old name left and a new one arrived.
  • They deactivated or deleted their account.
  • Instagram suspended their account (often bots — and those purges alone can shrink your follower count).

So treat the results as a lead, not proof. Before you take it personally, check their profile.

FAQ

Does Instagram notify you when someone unfollows you?

No. Instagram doesn't notify anyone about unfollows — not when someone unfollows you, and not when you unfollow someone.

Can I see who unfollowed me with just one export?

Not precisely — you need a before-and-after comparison. With a single export, you can see who doesn't follow you back.

Is this safe for my account?

Yes. The export comes from Instagram itself, and unfollowig only reads the file. It never logs into your account or sends any requests to Instagram.
